How to Use a Mala

1. Find your seat
Sit comfortably with spine straight. You may close your eyes or soften your gaze downward.
2. Hold the mala
Drape the mala over your middle or ring finger. Use your thumb to count each bead. The index finger, associated with ego, traditionally doesn't touch the beads.
3. Begin at the guru bead
The larger bead (☸) is the guru bead, marking start and finish. It is not counted, only honored.
4. Move through the beads
With each bead, recite your mantra (silently or aloud), take one breath, or focus on one word of contemplation. Pull each bead toward you with your thumb.
5. At the guru bead
When you return to the guru bead, pause. You may offer gratitude, set an intention, or simply notice the completion of one cycle.
6. To continue
If doing multiple rounds, don't cross over the guru bead. Instead, reverse direction and begin again.

Today's 108 Contemplations

A single word for each bead, offered for meditation:

Weeping Standing Midnight Wind River Leaf Threshold Color Always Presence Kindness Connection Emptiness Receiving Contracting Pausing Listening Creating Dancing Tasting Waking Sun Water Desert Home Mirror Time Now Compassion Release Love Here Softening Forgetting Allowing Knowing Healing Laughing Sitting Evening Rain Mountain Stem Departure Darkness Forever Breath Wisdom Harmony Space Flowing Expanding Continuing Embracing Discovering Moving Touching Dreaming Twilight Fire Forest Fruit Window Silence Sometimes Awareness Acceptance Truth Now Opening Remembering Trusting Feeling Transforming Whispering Walking Morning Stars Void Root Arrival Light Moment When Patience Balance Silence Becoming Rising Ending Releasing Wondering Resting Smiling Lying Dawn Earth Ocean Flower Doorway Sound Never Stillness Peace Simplicity Fullness Giving Returning

Breath Counting

If you don't have a mantra, simply count breaths. One bead per complete breath cycle (inhale and exhale). 108 breaths is approximately 15-20 minutes of meditation.
