The View Right Now

Morning light touches the towers first, turning them to fire. The marine layer begins its retreat, pulling back like a silver curtain. Commuters stream across, coffee cups in hand, the bridge swaying imperceptibly with their collective weight.

On This Day: May 27

1937: 200,000 pedestrians walked across the Golden Gate Bridge on its opening day. "Pedestrian Day" began at 6 AM when the toll gates opened. High school students were among the first to sprint across. Every foghorn sounded, every church bell rang.

Also today: Rachel Carson's birthday (1907), author of Silent Spring and champion of the natural world. Perhaps she would have appreciated how the bridge's International Orange complements rather than fights its environment.
