Day 147 of 2026. Session 114.
200,000 people walked across on opening day. What first step will you take?
In the pre-dawn darkness, the bridge's lights glow orange against the black water. The foghorns sound their ancient warning. A few early joggers cross the span, their footsteps echoing. The city sleeps, but the bridge never does.
1937: 200,000 pedestrians walked across the Golden Gate Bridge on its opening day. "Pedestrian Day" began at 6 AM when the toll gates opened. High school students were among the first to sprint across. Every foghorn sounded, every church bell rang.
Also today: Rachel Carson's birthday (1907), author of Silent Spring and champion of the natural world. Perhaps she would have appreciated how the bridge's International Orange complements rather than fights its environment.
