A meditation on the Battle of Waterloo
This page commemorates the Battle of Waterloo, fought on June 18, 1815, which ended Napoleon's rule and reshaped Europe.
Waterloo was one of history's decisive battles — the end of twenty-three years of almost continuous war that had begun with the French Revolution in 1792. Napoleon's defeat ushered in a century of relative peace in Europe, British global dominance, and the rise of nationalism that would eventually lead to the World Wars.
The battle also became a cultural touchstone. 'Meeting one's Waterloo' means facing final defeat. The battle has inspired novels, poems, symphonies, and films. Its commanders became legends.
The battlefield is preserved near Waterloo, Belgium, about 15 km south of Brussels. The Lion's Mound (Butte du Lion), built 1820-1826, offers a panoramic view. The construction controversially altered the terrain — Wellington reportedly said 'They have altered my field of battle!'
A visitor center, farms (Hougoumont, La Haye Sainte), and memorials mark the site. Every June 18, reenactors gather to commemorate the battle.
