Why Pi Matters

π is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It appears everywhere in mathematics: geometry, trigonometry, complex analysis, probability, and even in places that seem to have nothing to do with circles.

It's irrational (can't be expressed as a fraction) and transcendental (not the root of any polynomial). Its decimal expansion never repeats, never terminates, and contains (we believe) every possible finite sequence.

π is infinite, yet it perfectly describes finite circles. A meditation on the sublime.
