International Museum Day (IMD) was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977. Each year, museums around the world organize events around a central theme.
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) was founded in 1946. It is a non-governmental organization that establishes professional and ethical standards for museum activities. ICOM has over 50,000 members from 140 countries.
Their definition of a museum: "A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society, which researches, collects, conserves, interprets, and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage."
