1979: Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures sets the template
1980: Bauhaus releases "Bela Lugosi's Dead" - the first goth anthem
1982: The Batcave club opens in London's Soho

1990s: The scene goes underground but persists
2010s: A new wave of bands revives the sound
