A Brief History

Gothic rock emerged in the late 1970s as a darker, more introspective branch of post-punk. The sound was characterized by atmospheric guitars, driving bass lines, and vocals ranging from baritone croons to ethereal wails.

1979: Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures sets the template

1980: Bauhaus releases "Bela Lugosi's Dead" - the first goth anthem

1982: The Batcave club opens in London's Soho

1985: The Sisters of Mercy release First and Last and Always

1990s: The scene goes underground but persists

2010s: A new wave of bands revives the sound

2020s: Post-punk revival brings goth to a new generation
