The Gothic Revival

Gothic architecture originated in 12th-century France and dominated European building until the Renaissance. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Gothic Revival brought these forms back — not just in churches, but in universities, train stations, and private homes.

The goths of the 1980s inherited this aesthetic: the pointed arch, the darkness punctured by light, the sense of age and mystery. Every goth club is, in its way, a ruined cathedral.
