Flags with Stories

The 50-Star Flag

In 1958, 17-year-old Robert G. Heft of Ohio created a 50-star flag design for a school project, anticipating Hawaiian and Alaskan statehood. His teacher gave him a B-. Heft sent his design to his congressman, who passed it to President Eisenhower. When it was selected, Heft's teacher changed his grade to an A. Heft's flag has now been in use longer than any other version — since July 4, 1960.

The Green Flag of Libya

From 1977 to 2011, Libya flew the simplest flag in history: a solid green rectangle with no charges, symbols, or variations. It represented Muammar Gaddafi's "Green Revolution." After the 2011 revolution, Libya returned to a tricolor design.

Nepal's Unique Shape

Nepal is the only country with a non-rectangular flag. Two stacked triangles (pennants) represent the Himalayan mountains and the two main religions (Hinduism and Buddhism). Mathematical formulas for its construction are embedded in Nepal's constitution.
