About "Song of Myself"

"Song of Myself" is the longest and greatest poem in Leaves of Grass. In 52 sections over 1,346 lines, Whitman celebrates the self, the body, nature, democracy, and the unity of all things.

The poem opens with one of the most famous lines in American poetry:

I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

And it closes with a promise to meet you again:

I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,
If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.
