║ THE IMITATION GAME ║
║ A Tribute to Alan Turing ║
╚═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
A meditation on the father of computer science
The ideas that changed everything
The founding document of computer science. Introduces the concept of a universal machine that can compute anything computable - the theoretical basis for all modern computers. Also proves the halting problem is undecidable, setting fundamental limits on computation.
An electromechanical device designed to find Enigma settings. Using logical deductions about message structure, it could test millions of rotor configurations. Shortened the war by an estimated two years.
A detailed design for an electronic stored-program computer. More ambitious than other contemporary designs, many of its ideas weren't implemented until decades later.
The paper that asked 'Can machines think?' Proposes the Imitation Game as a practical test. Anticipates and rebuts objections that would be raised for the next 75 years.
Explains how patterns (stripes, spots, spirals) arise in biological development through chemical diffusion and reaction. Now called reaction-diffusion systems, this work founded mathematical biology.
Designed one of the first chess-playing programs, years before computers could actually run it. Traced through the algorithm by hand, move by move.
At the time of his death, Turing was deeply engaged with mathematical biology - understanding how patterns form in nature. His morphogenesis work was decades ahead of its time, only fully appreciated when computing power caught up with his ideas.
What else might he have discovered? We'll never know. He was 41 years old.
