A tribute to the Montgolfier Brothers and the dream of flight
1740-1810
Joseph-Michel Montgolfier (1740-1810) was the elder brother, a dreamer and inventor. One evening in November 1782, watching sparks rise from a fire, he wondered: what if that lifting force could be captured? He built a small silk bag, filled it with hot air over a fire, and watched it rise to the ceiling. The age of flight had begun in a paper manufacturer's study.
1745-1799
Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier (1745-1799) was the practical brother, skilled in business and engineering. When Joseph shared his discovery, Étienne refined it. He calculated volumes, designed the envelope, tested different materials. Together they created something neither could have made alone: the first aircraft in human history.
On June 4, 1783, in the town of Annonay, France, the brothers demonstrated their invention to a crowd of officials and townspeople. The balloon was 30 feet in diameter, made of sackcloth lined with paper, decorated with zodiac signs and royal emblems. It rose to nearly 6,000 feet and traveled over a mile before landing. No one aboard - but that would come. Three months later, a sheep, a duck, and a rooster would become the first aeronauts. On November 21, 1783, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes became the first humans to fly, drifting over Paris for 25 minutes. The Montgolfiers never flew in their own invention - they gave their gift to others.

The brothers' invention became known as the montgolfière (hot air balloon) to distinguish it from the charlière (hydrogen balloon) invented by Jacques Charles later that same year. Though hydrogen offered more lift, hot air balloons were simpler and safer. Today, recreational ballooning still uses the Montgolfiers' basic principle: hot air rises.
The brothers came from a family of paper manufacturers in Annonay. Their factory provided the materials for their experiments. Sixteen siblings in total—two became immortal.
