Daniel Quasar's 2018 redesign incorporates the transgender pride colors alongside black and brown stripes representing BIPOC communities and those lost to AIDS, acknowledging that progress requires centering marginalized voices.
When Gilbert Baker designed the first rainbow flag in 1978 for San Francisco Pride, commissioned by Harvey Milk, it had eight stripes:
Hot pink and turquoise were later removed due to fabric availability. Baker saw the flag as a gift to the world - he never trademarked it.
