✿ The Maypole ✿

A celebration of May Day, spring, and the dance of renewal

About The Maypole

May Day is a celebration with deep roots—both ancient and modern. It stands at the crossroads of:

The Maypole

The maypole itself is ancient—a tall wooden pole around which ribbons are woven in dance. It appears in Germanic, Scandinavian, and British traditions, though its exact origins are lost to time.

Some see it as a symbol of the World Tree (Yggdrasil), the axis mundi connecting earth and sky. Others see echoes of older fertility rites. Whatever its origins, it remains a joyful image of community—people dancing together, weaving something beautiful from simple strands.

The Two May Days

Modern May Day carries two distinct spirits:

Both are about renewal—one of the natural world, one of the social world. Both call us to dance.

And weave a fair garland of roses and thyme."
