Description

A tall biennial with a deep taproot and rosette of basal leaves. Heart-shaped leaves with downy undersides and serrated margins.

Composite flower heads resemble small moons with ray and disc florets, colored ember red. Blooms during the new moon.

Habitat

Prefers boggy meadows and the margins of still water.

Traditional Uses

The root makes a mordant dye ranging from grey to silver depending on preparation.

Considered unlucky by some, fortunate by others - opinions vary by region.
