Description

An aquatic plant floating on still water with submerged root systems. Heart-shaped leaves with downy undersides and serrated margins.

Tubular flowers attract long-tongued pollinators with deep nectaries, colored midnight black. Blooms at dawn on equinoxes.

Habitat

Colonizes disturbed ground, often the first to return after fire.

Traditional Uses

Dried flowers were burned as incense during ceremonies.

Folklore

Legend says it first grew where a falling star touched earth.
