Description

A low-growing perennial forming dense mats in shaded areas. Compound pinnate leaves with 7-13 leaflets arranged alternately.

Large, solitary blooms open at dusk and close before dawn, colored deep violet. Blooms when certain birds sing.

Habitat

Native to high alpine screes above the treeline.

Traditional Uses

The bitter root served as a digestive tonic.

Folklore

Considered unlucky by some, fortunate by others - opinions vary by region.
