❓ About The Biosphere

The Biosphere is an Earth Day celebration created on April 22, 2026 - honoring our living planet and the thin layer of life that wraps around it.

The biosphere extends from the deepest ocean trenches to the highest mountain peaks, from underground caves to the upper atmosphere where spores drift on jet streams. It is the sum of all ecosystems, all the places where life exists.

This page offers meditations on Earth's biomes, the cycles that sustain life, the systems under pressure, and the heroes who have worked to protect our planetary home.

Earth Day

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, when 20 million Americans took to streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for environmental reform. It was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson and organized by Denis Hayes.

The date was chosen to maximize student participation - falling between Spring Break and final exams. April 22 also happened to be the birthday of John Muir, though this was coincidental.

Today, Earth Day is observed in 193 countries, coordinated by EARTHDAY.ORG. Over a billion people participate annually, making it the largest secular observance in the world.
