The generation that fought the war became the generation that built the peace. Former enemies became partners. The European Coal and Steel Community, formed to make war between France and Germany "not merely unthinkable, but materially impossible," evolved into the European Union.
The United Nations, despite its imperfections, has provided a forum where nations talk rather than fight. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights articulated ideals that, while often violated, give us language to name injustice.
What grew was not perfection, but a framework for trying again.
