🐝 The Apiary 🐝

A celebration of bees, pollinators, and Anton JanΕ‘a
World Bee Day β€’ May 20

About The Apiary

World Bee Day

World Bee Day is observed annually on May 20th, the birthday of Anton JanΕ‘a, pioneer of modern beekeeping. The United Nations designated this day in 2017 to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face, and their contribution to sustainable development.

The initiative was championed by Slovenia, a country with deep beekeeping traditions, and was co-sponsored by 115 UN member states.

Why Bees Matter

Bees and other pollinators are essential to life on Earth. They pollinate 75% of the world's food crops and 90% of wild flowering plants. Without them, ecosystems would collapse and food security would be imperiled.

Yet bees face mounting threats: habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, and disease are causing alarming population declines worldwide.

The 2024 Theme

Each year focuses on a theme. Recent themes have included:

"We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."
