In the small hours, when Monroe often couldn't sleep...

"A wise girl knows her limits, a smart girl knows that she has none."

She taught us that glamour and sadness can coexist.

✦ The Centennial

One hundred years ago, on June 1, 1926, a baby girl was born in the charity ward of Los Angeles County Hospital. Her mother, Gladys Pearl Baker, named her Norma Jeane Mortenson.

That child would become Marilyn Monroe—the most photographed woman of the 20th century, a cultural icon who transcended her era to become eternal.

A century later, her image still appears in art galleries and on bedroom walls, her quotes still inspire and comfort, and her films still enchant new generations. She proved that beauty and brains, humor and pathos, vulnerability and strength can coexist in one magnificent human being.

Happy 100th Birthday, Norma Jeane.
