On May 26, 1897, Archibald Constable and Company published a novel by Bram Stoker, business manager of the Lyceum Theatre. The book was called Dracula. It told of an ancient Transylvanian Count who sought to establish a new hunting ground in England, and of the band of friends who stopped him.
Reviews were positive. Sales were modest. Stoker continued managing the theatre and writing other books. He died in 1912, nearly impoverished, never knowing that his creation would become the most adapted character in literary history.
