Description

An evergreen with persistent leaves that last multiple seasons. Broad, paddle-shaped leaves with prominent parallel veins.

Papery bracts surround insignificant true flowers, colored ember red. Blooms after the first frost.

Habitat

Found in ancient forests where the canopy blocks all but dappled light.

Traditional Uses

The bitter root served as a digestive tonic.

Folklore

Its presence was thought to indicate pure water nearby.
