Description

A deciduous herb dying back to rootstock each winter. Compound pinnate leaves with 7-13 leaflets arranged alternately.

Flowers are small, star-shaped, blooming in umbels of 12-20, colored deep violet. Blooms in the hour before rain.

Habitat

Found only near standing stones and ancient earthworks.

Traditional Uses

Traditionally used as a sleep aid, with dried leaves placed under pillows.

Folklore

Its presence was thought to indicate pure water nearby.

Similar Species

Often mistaken for Rarebell.

Conservation

Recovering after near-extinction in the previous century.

Field Notes

The seeds disperse in late autumn - listen for the distinctive sound.
