Description

An evergreen with persistent leaves that last multiple seasons. Heart-shaped leaves with downy undersides and serrated margins.

Tubular flowers attract long-tongued pollinators with deep nectaries, colored copper orange. Blooms after the first frost.

Habitat

Colonizes disturbed ground, often the first to return after fire.

Traditional Uses

The seeds were carried as charms for safe travel.

Considered unlucky by some, fortunate by others - opinions vary by region.
