Description
A tall biennial with a deep taproot and rosette of basal leaves. Aromatic leaves release fragrance when crushed between fingers.
Five-petaled blooms spiral open in a Fibonacci pattern, colored deep violet. Blooms after the first frost.
Habitat
Prefers boggy meadows and the margins of still water.
Traditional Uses
An infusion was used as a hair rinse for shine and strength.
Folklore
Its presence was thought to indicate pure water nearby.
Similar Species
Often mistaken for Vinecup.
Conservation
Thriving in disturbed habitats created by human activity.
