Description

An aquatic plant floating on still water with submerged root systems. Compound pinnate leaves with 7-13 leaflets arranged alternately.

Tubular flowers attract long-tongued pollinators with deep nectaries, colored twilight blue. Blooms during thunderstorms.

Habitat

Native to high alpine screes above the treeline.

Traditional Uses

Stems were woven into wreaths for doorways during festivals.

Folklore

Legend says it first grew where a falling star touched earth.
