HORSE

Equus

The Horse carried humanity from savagery to civilization. Pegasus bore heroes to the stars; Sleipnir carried Odin between worlds; Al-Buraq bore the Prophet to heaven. The Horse's eye is largest of any land mammal, reflecting the wide world it was born to survey. It sleeps standing, ever ready to flee, yet learns to trust the rider upon its back. The Horse understands human speech better than we know, responding to whispered commands and unspoken fears. White horses are sacred; black horses bear Death; pale horses carry Plague. The bond between Horse and rider is a mystery of willing partnership - neither master nor servant, but something older and deeper.
