GRIFFIN
Gryps
The Griffin has the body of a Lion and the head and wings of an Eagle, combining the King of Beasts with the King of Birds. It guards gold deposits in the mountains, fighting the one-eyed Arimaspians who seek to steal it. Griffins mate for life; if one dies, the other never seeks another, modeling faithful widowhood. The claws of the Griffin detect poison when made into drinking vessels. Alexander the Great is said to have harnessed Griffins to a basket, flying to the ends of the earth. The Griffin represents Christ in His dual nature - Lion of Judah and ascending Eagle. In heraldry, the Griffin suggests valor and vigilance.
