CHIMERA
Chimaera
The Chimera has three heads - Lion, Goat, and Serpent - though artists depict this variously. Fire pours from the Goat's mouth, for beneath the Chimera's mountain home, volcanic vents burn eternally. Bellerophon, riding Pegasus, slew the Chimera by dropping lead into its flaming throat, where the metal melted and choked the beast. The Chimera represents impossible combinations, things that should not be yet are. In modern speech, a chimera is any fantastic idea or hybrid creation. The three heads suggest past, present, and future, or else mind, body, and spirit at war with each other.
