CENTAUR

Centaurus

The Centaur is half man and half horse, combining human reason with animal strength and passion. Most Centaurs are wild and violent, given to wine and lust, unable to control their animal natures - they represent the danger of letting passion rule reason. But Chiron the Centaur was wise and gentle, tutoring Achilles, Asclepius, and Jason. He invented medicine, music, and archery, teaching humans to exceed their limitations. When accidentally wounded by Heracles' poisoned arrow, Chiron gave up his immortality to escape eternal pain, ascending to become the constellation Sagittarius. The Centaur reminds us that we are all part animal, and wisdom lies not in denying this but in balancing both natures.
